Sewer redevelopment
On the safe side with Linear Shoring
SE|BS Stadtentwässerung Braunschweig GmbH commissioned the Hanover/Saxony-Anhalt directorate of STRABAG AG with the redevelopment of the sewer system that runs under Salzdahlumer Straße in Braunschweig. The project confronted the construction company with a number of greatly varying challenges. Firstly, conditions on-site allowed very little space to work, and secondly, the redevelopment of the 400-meter-long route had to be completed without obstructing traffic, as Salzdahlumer Straße is one of Braunschweig’s most important arterial roads.
Furthermore, Salzdahlumer Straße is not only the feeder road for the nearby National Highway 39, Braunschweig Clinic is also situated on it and accessibility to this key regional medical center had to be guaranteed for the duration of the project. Another factor that couldn‘t be entirely discounted was the risk of encountering unexploded bombs left over from World War II during excavation work.
After carefully considering the technical parameters, the contracting company decided to use Emunds+Staudinger Linear Shoring, one of thyssenkrupp Infrastructure’s proprietary product brands. The decision proved to be an attractive solution, particularly inview of the constructional characteristics of the system, as the ground around the excavation needed to remain largely untouched and subsidence kept to an absolute minimum, to protect buildings in the immediate vicinity.
The Linear Shoring system fulfilled these requirements in every way, as the rigid supporting frame around the trench effectively prevents subsidence in the surrounding soil. Instead of hinged struts in fixed positions, the Linear Shoring system uses a rigid boogie car to hold the soldiers, which ensures that the shoring always remains reliably the same distance apart at every stage of the project.

The shoring project on Salzdahlumer Straße had to be performed in a very limited space and without interrupting traffic.
Smooth operations at the construction site
Eight fields of Linear Shoring with double slide-rails were used in the course of the Salzdahlumer Straße construction project, which also included the installation of new manholes. In most cases, 4 meter unit lengths were used, enabling the pipes to be optimally lowered onto the pipe bottoms. However, shorter units were also available to enable the shoring to be accurately adapted, especially when dealing with utility lines crossing.
A thyssenkrupp area manager was on site during the rst few days of the construction project to instruct excavator drivers and other workers on how to handle the shoring system. The project cost approximately 1.5 million Euros and was successfully completed in November 2014.
